It’s National Dental Hygiene Month! In an effort to celebrate the work our dental hygienists at Cary Dental Associates do and raise awareness on the importance of oral health, we are educating our patients on proper brushing techniques. This year, we are focusing on the four routines recommended by the American Dental Association, that can help maintain healthy smiles: brush, floss, rinse and chew. As your dentist in Cary IL, your healthy smile is our top priority.
Proper Brushing Techniques
Are you brushing properly? Below are a few tips and tricks to make sure your daily brushing routine is done correctly.
- Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums. Gently move the brush back and forth in short strokes.
- Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath smelling fresh.
- Clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth by tilting your brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.
- Clean between your teeth once a day to remove plaque that is not removed from brushing.
Why Rinsing & Chewing Is important
Did you know that teeth alone account for less than half of the mouth? Brushing and flossing alone are not enough to remove all of the bacteria in the mouth. Fortunately, rinsing with water can help to eliminate biofilm and bacteria. Rinsing often, along with brushing and flossing, will help to reduce the chance of dental decay and infection.
Clinical studies have shown that chewing sugarless gum can help to prevent tooth decay. Chewing sugarless gum increases the flow of saliva, which will wash away food and other debris, in order to neutralize acids produced by bacteria in the mouth.
