4 Myths About Dental Veneers

4 Myths About Dental Veneers

Published on August 12th, 2016

Porcelain veneers in Crystal Lake IL can be advantageous to those who have suffered from dental trauma, excessive wear, discoloration, and malpositioning. Porcelain veneers are thin laminates that are chemically bonded to your teeth. They help to improve the shape and alignment of your teeth, while simultaneously enhancing the color. Often times, patients seem to have a misleading perception of what veneers will do to their oral health. We have compiled a list of four myths about dental veneers.

1. They entire tooth has to be filed down before the veneer can be applied: This is a common belief by our patients at Cary Dental Associates. Reshaping is usually required before applying veneers, most people only require a minimal amount of work. Today, veneers can be made as thin as 1mm, allowing less prep work than previously.

2. They’re only used aesthetically: The primary purpose of veneers is to improve the overall look of your smile, veneers are also used to rebuild worn or misshapen teeth, and support the lips and cheeks.

3. Veneer application is painful: Like any dental procedure, patients will be put under a local anesthetic when veneers are applied. There will be little to no pain or discomfort.

4. Veneers are only necessary for the front of the mouth: Veneers are commonly placed on the six front teeth, due to their visibility, however, veneers can be placed anywhere in the mouth. Often times, patients use them on lower teeth or premolars to even out or widen their smile.
