In honor of April being Oral Cancer Awareness Month, our dentists dedicated to family dental care in Cary, IL wanted to make a blog post to call attention to this issue. There’s not nearly enough talk about oral cancer and the devastating effects it has on the people who suffer from it. Did you know that oral cancer kills nearly one person every hour of every day? Only about 60 percent of people diagnosed live longer than five years.
Watch-Outs
Early detection of oral cancer can make a huge impact in the long run, so visiting your dentist regularly is a great way to ensure your mouth is healthy. Most of the time, oral cancer initially develops because of flat cells called squamous cells. These cells cover the surfaces of the mouth, lips or throat. You may notice that you’re developing a white or red patch on your gums, tongue, tonsils or on the lining of your mouth. It’s potentially difficult to chew, swallow, or even talk. Your voice may change, and you could have constant bad breath.
Risk Factors
Excessive tobacco and alcohol use are the two main risk factors for developing this type of cancer. Tobacco coming from cigarettes, cigars or pipes can cause oral cancer, especially with repeated use. Oral tobacco products such as dip and chew are also linked to cancers of the cheeks, lips and gums.
